Which Direct Part Marking Method is Best for You?
Matt Martin Tue, Apr 17, 2012 @ 09:04 AM
There are many different ways to direct mark a product or part. Each marking method has its own strengths and applications. Here are some examples of different direct part marking solutions offered by Durable Technologies:
Traditional Marking Tools
Durable Technologies manufactures and supplies a wide selection of traditional marking tools and supplies for industrial part marking applications including steel stamps and dies, steel type, hand stamps, and holders, stencils, industrial mil-spec inks, and much more. Our steel stamps and marking dies are custom engineered for identifying a variety of industrial products and can be made for stamping part numbers, patent numbers, trade names, trademarks, special lettering, or other data onto flat, curved, concave, or convex surfaces.
Impact Presses
Durable Technologies' impact presses are simple to set up, easy to operate and offer excellent repeatability. They provide significant advantages in terms of control, safety, and reliability, and are low maintenance. Our impact presses are used in virtually every manufacturing environment from heavy-duty industrial factories to small custom metalworking shops. Durable Technologies can provide you with a turnkey impact press package including custom steel stamps, steel type, type holders, and manual or automatic numbering heads depending on your specific part marking requirements. We can also help you design a custom fixture for your parts to hold them safely and securely in place while marking.
CNC Marking Tools
Durable Technologies supplies easy-to-use, economical, spindle-actuated permanent marking devices for marking a multitude of materials, from tool steel to thin-walled plastics. These devices do not rely on electrical or compressed air input and are easily integrated into horizontal and vertical machining centers, and similar CNC machines using a rotating spindle. The DuraDot® marking attachment can be used to create alpha-numeric characters, logos, bar codes, and much more in precise low-stress dot patterns.
Hot Foil Stamping
The hot stamping process includes a hot stamping press, hot stamping dies or type, and a hot stamping foil. The hot stamping press heats up the die or type, the marking cycle starts when the press engages the heated die or type with the foil and presses the foil in contact with the part to be marked. The press then disengages at the end of the marking cycle leaving behind a crisp, permanent ink mark on the part.
Ink Jet Printers
There are different kinds of inkjet printers available including small character CIJ printers which are perfect for printing date coding or other traceability information on food and beverage or pharmaceutical packaging substrates. There are also large-character DOD printers that were designed for printing on a wide variety of substrates, including corrugated, plastics, metals, paper, foils, and more. There are hi-resolution printers that are ideal for printing hi-resolution text, barcodes, graphics, and symbols on both porous and non-porous substrates. Lastly, we offer portable inkjet printers for marking parts around the shop or out in the field, or when the size or weight of the part makes it impractical to mark using stationary printers.
